The up toE date information is cached in memory while the disk copy is set toC mark more blocks allocated then are actually allocated to files.F When a file needs more blocks it gets those which have already been marked allocated.F When the disk rebuilds, the actual blocks allocated are scanned and the map is rebuilt.C For most clusters, it makes sense to mount disks with /norebuild? on boot and to a "set volume/rebuild" on a periodic basis (IB always did it in my weekly full backup scripts at 1:00 am prior to the BACKUP command). F The penalty for doing this is having several blocks unuseable for aF while if there was a crash, until the rebuild detects that they areB not actually in use. This probably means starting theE50 threads going, spinning on a counted semaphore, with the exception3enabled, and then having each of the threads fault.GIt is hard to debug these without the actual code (and difficult then).B One possibility that comes to mind is that somewhere in the faultAprocessing code (quite possibly the application), there is a dataCstructure that is serially reusable as opposed to fully re-entrant.AVariations of the tests described above can identify this type ofproblem.$- Bob Gezelter, http://www.rlgsc.comCP.S.
