This count represents the number of blocks written to the tape by the operating system. It does NOT in any way express the actual physical tape usage, when using hardware compression. If you obtain this value after writing the last saveset to tape during your backup operation - but BEFORE dismounting the tape, you can get an exact value of how many blocks have been written to the tape. $ ANAL/SYS SDA> SHOW DEV MUA0 SDA> EXA UCB+UCB$L_RECORD SDA> EXIT Volker. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2007 13:11:25 -0500 From: "Main, Kerry" Subject: RE: Blast from the 1988s (DEC proposal) Message-ID: =20 > -----Original Message----- > From: Mark Daniel [mailto:mark.daniel@vsm.com.au]=20 > Sent: January 16, 2007 4:07 AM > To: Info-VAX@Mvb.Saic.Com > Subject: Re: Blast from the 1988s (DEC proposal) >=20 > Larry Kilgallen wrote: > > In article <87ac0kdrjo.fsf@k9.prep.synonet.com>,=20 > prep@k9.prep.synonet.com writes: > >=20 > >>JF Mezei writes: > >> > >> > >>>At the time, the graphs showed from the all mighty microvax II to > >>>the VAX 8978. An option existed to extend the star coupler ports (32?). Having stated this, you could still use boot nodes or other LAN based cluster servers to expand beyond these limits. Just to update everyone: According to some diagnostic information provided by David Turner, 6 beeps indicates a memory error. Reseating the memory did not fix the problem. Replacing the memory did not fix the problem. All the fans are spinning. The RMC reports the power supply as good. I ended up moving the memory, card, drives, etc. into another DS10L where they work fine. I guess I have a system board failure of some kind. Oh well, now I have a supply of extra fans, etc. While I had the replacement machine open and was moving memory around I confirmed that all four memory sockets are live. I had 1.5GB of memory recognized. Has anyone seen low profile memory for the DS10L that can be used without the riser cards? -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Scheers, Applied Synergy, Inc. I'm aware of TCPware but i'd prefer to use something covered by the normal hobbyist licenses. We need ssh to setup some internet "gateways" of our hobbyist DECnet, and the use of telnet over potentially dangerous networks to let users login is not an option... Of course we could use linux/unix/somethingelse gateways, but that's not really nice too :P PS I'd need a version of ucx compatible with vms 5.5-2 for an old vax too... someone got one around? PPS The website of our hobbyist decnet is http://decnet.ipv7.net ... still in italian language only, but we will take care of that soon enough (i hope). We use a modified version of the HECnet bridge (with permission from Billquist), we'll put our version online too sometime soon. What about Process Software's Multinet? That's currently the best SSH implementation on OpenVMS and I think they also ran on OpenVMS V7.2. They provide a Hobbyist license for it. It's a normal Hobbyist license; no abnormal licenses from them. http://www.multinet.process.com/license.html If you want HP's TCP/IP, you can try the EAK (Early Adopters' Kit) of TCP/IP V5.4 which works on V7.2-2 or higher: http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/products/ssh/ssh.html Note that the EAK is somewhat buggy... Multinet is a *LOT* better. -Dan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2007 09:30:15 -0600 (CST) From: sms@antinode.org (Steven M. What's "normal" to you? If you need software from Process Software, you might need to get a (free, hobbyist) license from Process Software. Is this abnormal? Why VMS V7.2? > I'd need a version of ucx compatible with vms 5.5-2 for an old vax too... > someone got one around? SYLOGICALS.COM for a virgin 8.3 system sets the value to 16 "as an example" (and the example is not commented out) which removes the cluster broadcasts and delivery. I thought something felt different because in the past, when on VAX, I seemed to be getting those broadcasts. In the 8.3 file, it "strongly" recomments setting bit 4 (value 16) which is something to do with a phase 5 parser even of we don't use phase 5. Does anyone have a clearer explanation for this ? This bug has both a functional and performance aspect, as the file headers for excluded files are visited. (heard about NJABL here on cov). With the advent of Spamhaus's PBL (http://spamhaus.org/pbl/), dynablock.njabl.org has become obsolete. Rather than maintain separate similar DNSBL zones, NJABL will be working with Spamhaus on the PBL. Effective immediately, dynablock.njabl.org exists as a copy of the Spamhaus PBL. After dynablock users have had ample time to update their configurations, the dynablock.njabl.org zone will be emptied. Other NJABL zones (i.e. dnsbl, combined, bhnc, and the qw versions) will continue, business as usual, except that combined will eventually lose its dynablock component. If you currently use dynablock.njabl.org we recommend you switch immediately to pbl.spamhaus.org. If you currently use combined.njabl.org, we recommend you add pbl.spamhaus.org to the list of DNSBLs you use. You may also want to consider using zen.spamhaus.org, which is a combination zone consisting of Spamhaus's SBL, XBL, and PBL zones. ------------------------------ Date: 21 Jan 2007 06:00:47 -0800 From: hillstreet2@gmail.com Subject: Re: Outlook Calendar & OpenVMS Message-ID: <1169388047.731176.293250@v45g2000cwv.googlegroups.com> Christoph Gartmann wrote: > Hello, > > is there a software for OpenVMS that allows a user to manage his calendar via > www from around the globe? We were so impressed with how cool Quintara was that we bought two copies for my in-house servers. Quintara runs natively on OpenVMS (in my case on Alpha but they have Integrity support also) and it has been very reliable. I haven't played with the calendar stuff much but it looks cool. I think they are working on some sort of notes/notebook thing too. Brilliant has been very supportive of their software and are very open to implementing user contributed features, sometimes within a few hours. Absolutely amazing considering today's corporate attitudes. Excerpts from the company's web site (http://www.brilliant.com/qsoft.html) discuss calendaring as a standard Quintara feature, and they have a link to a demonstration server: * Personal calendar. Provides flexible year, month, week, day, and event views, and simple Acrobat PDF downloads of calendar views. * Calendar is iCalendar-compliant and interoperates with industry-standard Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes calendars. I think they were doing some sort of joint venture with HP for a bundled secure server of some sort on OpenVMS, not sure how that worked out but they mention a web site http://trysecureserver.com for information about it. In theory, it could be > generated automatically, but it contains more info than is currently > kept in ziperr.h, so that would involve actual work. You know, without a _huge_ effort, we could define a slightly more complex structure for ziperrors[], perhaps something like: struct { char *name; char severity; char *string; } ziperrors[ZE_MAXERR] = { /* 1 */ { "", -1, ""}, /* 2 */ {"EOF", 4, "Unexpected end of zip file"}, /* 3 */ {"FORM, 2, "Zip file structure invalid"}, [...] }; (Or, perhaps, something with better member alignment.) Non-VMS systems would not use the first two members, and current consumers could use something like ZIPERRORS instead of ziperrors, where: #define ZIPERRORS ziperrors.string The VMS code could then get severity info from here instead of using its own logic (vms/vms.c: vms_exit()), and a small (run-anywhere) C program could crank out a guaranteed-consistent VMS message source file (zip_msg.msg). I assume that something similar could be done for UnZip, too, but I haven't looked closely. Thoughts? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Steven M.
