In essence, taxpayers in europe and USA end up hurting struggling farmers in africa. While it is true that changes in orbital geometry along with a Sun that's now 30% hotter may have the same trigger effects, the results are far different. Raise the temperature of Mars by 5 degrees and you may unthaw some CO2 ice. Raise the temperature of Earth by 5 degrees and you will unthaw the permafrost (which will release CO2 and methane) and the oceans (which will release methane hydrate). Now when these gases are released heating will probably jump up another 5 degrees and that will kill off everything) Check this link for more information about what happened on Earth 250 Million years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permian_extinction Neil Rieck Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. http://www3.sympatico.ca/n.rieck/ -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2007 00:38:25 +0000 (UTC) From: david20@alpha2.mdx.ac.uk Subject: Re: AMD's well may be running dry Message-ID: In article , JF Mezei writes: >david20@alpha2.mdx.ac.uk wrote: >> If only it were that simple. Even at the height of the food and wine mountains in Europe the overproduction wasn't anywhere within a thousand miles of 14-27%. From http://www.edie.net/news/news_story.asp?id=11549 " The EU goal of replacing 5.75% of fossil fuels with bio-fuels by 2010 would require significant imports from countries like Brazil and Indonesia. According to the EU-sponsored Well to Wheels study, Europe would have to use 14-27% of its agricultural land to reach this target - more than is realistic, meaning the target cannot be met with domestically produced biofuels alone. " and from http://www.i-sis.org.uk/BFOA.php " David Pimentel, a professor of crops science at Cornell University New York and Tad Patzek, a professor of chemical engineering at University of California Berkeley, reviewed the energy balance and economics of producing biomass, ethanol or biodiesel from corn, switchgrass, wood, soybeans and sunflower using the now generally accepted life-cycle analysis. Although there is much controversy over the energy balance of ethanol and biodiesel, the energy balance of biomass yield is generally less subject to dispute, and is therefore a useful starting point. It turns out that switchgrass has the most favourable output/input energy ratio of 14.52, followed by wheat at 12.88, and oilseed rape at 9.21, if the straw is included. Switchgrass is hence the most promising energy crop, whether as biomass for burning or to make other fuels downstream, such as ethanol. A quick calculation showed that even if all the farmland in the United States were converted to growing switchgrass, it would not produce enough ethanol for the country?s fossil fuel use. Switchgrass takes several years to mature. The yield ranges from 0 for complete failure of the crop to take hold to 20 t or more per ha, a lot depending on the rainfall. A yield of 15 t /ha is optimistic; and would provide some 250 GJ/ha of raw chemical energy a year. If that energy could be converted with 70 percent efficiency into electricity, ethanol, methanol etc., it would take about 460 m ha to produce the 80EJ (ExaJoule = 1018J) fossil fuel energy used in the USA each year. The total farmland in the USA is 380 m ha, of which 175 m ha is harvested cropland. If you're on OpenVMS V6.2 with a corresponding IP stack, the DCL command COPY/FTP is significantly easier, more reliable, and simpler to field errors from. What you're doing can be gotten to work, but you're here encountering what is likely just the tip of the effort of dealing with the FTP command utility. Here's the basic syntax for the command: COPY/FTP [/qualifiers] from to You can specify the username and password as you would with a DECnet specification, and -- and this is the really useful part -- you can perform direct DCL symbol substitution without resorting to writing a command procedure and all the associated effort. Here's an example of the command: $ COPY/FTP/BIN - localfile.txt - x.example.com"usr pwd"::"\here\there\xyz.txt" This shows how both the username and password syntax works, and how the quoting can be used with a foreign file system specification. When this stuff arrived at OpenVMS V6.2, I started switching everything to the new syntax, even existing code. It's just that much easier to deal with, and that much easier to support. -- www.HoffmanLabs.com Services for OpenVMS ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 15:34:21 -0400 From: JF Mezei Subject: Re: FTP Login (to remote site) puzzle Message-ID: <576f9$45f5ab5e$cef8887a$24774@TEKSAVVY.COM> Display Name wrote: > Anyone have experience logging in to a remote host using a scripted > approach? Dear Mr Name, depending on what FTP stack you have, you may need to do: $DEFINE/USER TT SY$INPUT $DEFINE/USER SYS$COMMAND SYS$INPUT $FTP destination SEND chocolate.TXT EXIT $! The advantage of the above structure is that you can make multiple file transfers with a single FTP connection. As Mr Hoff said, you can likely use COPY/FTP command which, for single file transfers is far better. It also has the advantage of having symbol substitution capabilities since the whole transaction is in a single DCL line. example: $COPY/FTP/VERBOSE sys$login:login.com - xdelta.zko.dec.com"username password"::login.tmp The remote file specification (after the ::) can be enclosed in double quotes , and you can then specify a Unix syntax with "dir/dir/filename.ext" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 12:59:01 -0700 From: Fred Bach Subject: Re: FTP Login (to remote site) puzzle Message-ID: Hoff, I had plenty of FTP scripts, some of which I run in VMS batch every 5 minutes or as necessary to send a current-status file to the (linux-based) internal web server here Eventually I did the same as you - convert them to copy/ftp , and it works very well, most of the time. I am connecting to a WinTel server (running Windows 2000) to obtain / exchange files; I may be wrong (it happened once before), but I thought the COPY/FTP was VMS-Node to VMS-Node ? I do agree with your observation about symbol substituion; I've had to construct many DCL Jobs to 'write' other DCL Jobs, using the first one to determine variables (Date parsing ,etc.) and create solid values. It's apparently now happened twice. But don't worry about overflows, as I'm way ahead of you on the brain-cramp count. :-) But seriously, COPY/FTP and DIRECTORY/FTP work with most FTP server around. Including that of Microsoft Windows server, Linux, Mac OS X, or otherwise. As for another comment in this thread, COPY/FTP is its own verb, and does not accept qualifiers from the COPY verb -- this is the CLD syntax mechanism, and only those qualifiers recognized by COPY/FTP will be allowed once the /FTP is encountered. You can't hang COPY qualifiers off the COPY/FTP verb. Similar CLD syntax processing lurks with the COPY/RECORDABLE_MEDIA qualifier of V8.3, and most certainly with the ANALYZE verb. RSX-20F is a minor variant, but the build environment is full RSX-11M. Major differences are the restriction of most tasks to the GEN partition, the change to the filesystem drivers to deal with 16-bit words on 18-bit media, and the need for a driver for the DTE-20 interface between the front end, an 11/40 in one or two chassis, and the back end. Doug Jensen's Libra vision for a distributed RT OS, if it had ever been completed, would have exactly been "another low volume real time OS", so I'm not 100% sure that was the main reason. Maybe it was "DEC didn't feel like simultaneously porting an RT OS and writing another radically new one for little perceived reward", which perhaps wouldn't seem unreasonable? The E+RT group changed hands before Libra was finished. > We wanted to port VMS based realtime applications from VAX to Alpha > and were disapointed to find out VMS was not supported on the target > Alpha boards. Clearly we new VMS could handle the application and > we didn't want to do an OS port. Assuming you mean VME boards: OSF/1 (Tru64) was supported on the relevant Alpha-based VME boards, but VMS customers wanting VMEbus access either had to use a real VMS-supported computer with a possibly-suitable VME adapter (TURBOchannel to VME, FB+ to VME, PCI to VME, depending on era) or abandon VMS (and thus likely abandon DEC/CPQ/HP). Given that (iirc) there was no native VAX/VMS VMEbus system, just bus adaptors, surely the Alpha/VMS VMEbus situation wasn't that different ? VMS native on VMEbus (ie on DEC AXPvme and AlphaVME cards) would have been nice, but there didn't seem to be that much demand for it (at least around Europe), so as a standalone commercial decision it probably was justified (unless there were big projects around which weren't visible to me in Europe). Whether it was justified "in the bigger picture", the one where DEC/CPQ/HP offered the vision of single-vendor solutions and the like, is less clear. If you don't mean VME boards?
