From: Casey Schaphorst To: All Msg #431, 04-Feb-88 22:31:20CDT Subject: Emacs I've been playing around with Emacs v.3.9, and using it on a project I am working on (have been for 2 years now, gads). A few things are immediately apparent. (1) The Amiga.RC set-up file won't work unless the ^M's are stripped (2) The key-bindings are NOT the same as they are for MS-DOS machines. The Amiga.RC file attempts to attach a handy set of commands to your function keys, but fails because FN0 - FN9 on a clone is really FNP - FNY on the Amiga. (3) The shifted function keys seem to _always_ be attached to the execute-macro-11 thru 20 commands no matter how hard you try to reassign them. (4) The macro capability is not totally debugged. My Amiga GURUs just abut every time I try to use an interactive variable. What Emacs desparately needs is a better set up file more friendly to Amiga folks. The supplied Amiga.RC file, in my opinion, fails miserably. It won't even work unless it is painstakingly stripped of ^M's. ED can't be used to do this, because it chokes on the ^I's. It took me a while to figure out how to do strip those ^M's. Even then, the fn key definitions supplied by Amiga.RC fail to work. The assignments to the shifted keys seem to "fall through" to the unshifted keys, and the unshifted keys are only assigned if you change FN 0 - 9 to FN P - Y. I've been trying to accomplish this, but the macro-ing on Emacs is just unfriendly enough to keep me frustrated. Perhaps this note will circulate to the powers-that-be on this subject ... a solution would be helpful to anyone that wants to use this (very nice) uEmacs on their Amiga. --- * Origin: The Wind Dragon Inn - Omaha, NE 402-291-8053 (Opus 14/614)
