There are commonly 3 problems when doing this type of thing (assuming all the hardware is in fact working): 1) You have a "compatible" drive (Micropolis 1325/1335), not an RD53. In this case you need to solder a jumper in R7 on the drive logic board (it's cur- rently vacant). That's the difference between the DEC drive and the others. 2) You have the unit selects set wrong. Typically DEC drives want to be unit 3 (of 4). If you never even get a blink of the drive access light (this, of course, requires a drive faceplate, not present on DEC RD53's 8-). 3) The drive isn't formatted. You need to use TEST something to format it - the exact number varies, consult the appropriate hardware manual for more info.
