Introductory Information on UUNET Communications Services Last Updated: 20-May-1990 The uunet machine is currently available for uucp mail and news access. Please address any questions to uunet!postmaster Please note that uunet is down for backup dumps Saturdays or Sundays from 10am to 2pm Eastern time. Uunet runs pathalias, so you should be able to send mail to uunet!anysite!user and have it delivered. The pathalias database is synced daily with the master uucp path database, so it will always have the most up to date paths available. If you want a news feed, please send mail to uunet!postmaster indicating what groups you want. We will used compressed batching unless you specify otherwise. We will also only queue up the outgoing news after 7pm (your time) to minimize your transfer costs (unless told otherwise). Note that mail is queued up with uucp grade 'Z' and news is queued up with grade 'd'. If your uucp supports graded transfers (4.3 BSD and modern versions of HoneyDanBer do), then you can put a line like: uunet Any/Z,Any1900-0700 ACU ..... in your L.sys, which will only transfer mail during the day and will transfer news in the offpeak times (4.3 BSD supports the NonPeak entry, but it is offpeak for Telenet, NOT TYMNET. DO NOT USE NonPeak for Tymnet.) Tymnet Peak hours are 6am to 7pm Monday-Friday. Day rates are 8am-5pm Mon-Fri. Evening rates are 5pm-11pm Mon-Fri and 5pm-11pm on Sunday. Night rates are 11pm-8am Mon-Fri, all day Saturday and midnight-5pm on Sunday. For Tymnet and the 800 number, your timezone applies. The latest news software is available for you to uucp in the directory uunet!~/news: news: total 1748 -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 354155 Jul 15 1987 Notes.tar.Z lrwxrwxr-x 1 root 26 Apr 2 15:07 active -> /usr/local/lib/news/active drwxrwxr-x 3 root 512 Oct 30 1989 bnews-2.11 drwxrwxr-x 2 asp 512 Apr 20 15:14 cnews lrwxrwxr-x 1 root 15 Apr 2 15:07 compress.tar -> ../compress.tar lrwxrwxr-x 1 root 30 Apr 2 15:07 newsgroups -> /usr/local/lib/news/newsgroups -rw-r--r-- 1 asp 72683 Apr 9 10:44 newsxd.tar.Z drwxrwxr-x 2 asp 512 May 17 17:46 nn -rw-r--r-- 1 root 189031 Mar 11 20:30 nntp.1.5.8.tar.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 asp 53340 Apr 7 23:11 nntplink2.0.3.tar.Z drwxrwxr-x 2 rick 512 May 15 14:42 rn lrwxrwxr-x 1 root 23 Apr 2 15:07 sys -> /usr/local/lib/news/sys -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 1068615 Aug 30 1989 tmnn7-8.tar.Z /usr/spool/ftp/news/bnews-2.11: total 497 -r--r--r-- 1 rick 2558 Jan 17 1986 cvt.tar.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 112537 Oct 29 1986 doc.tar.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 28997 Oct 29 1986 man.tar.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 46134 Oct 30 1986 misc.tar.Z drwxrwxr-x 2 rick 512 Oct 30 1989 patches -rw-rw-r-- 1 rick 271270 Oct 30 1989 src.tar.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 18101 Sep 22 1986 uucp.tar.Z /usr/spool/ftp/news/bnews-2.11/patches: total 384 -r--r--r-- 1 rick 26927 Nov 24 1986 patch.1.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 27523 Oct 8 1987 patch.10.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 22678 Oct 17 1987 patch.11.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 18451 Nov 4 1987 patch.12.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 25472 Nov 23 1987 patch.13.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 16059 Dec 4 1987 patch.14.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 26533 Jan 24 1989 patch.15.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 28605 Jan 24 1989 patch.16.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 13852 Jan 24 1989 patch.17.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 27397 Sep 12 1989 patch.18.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 7659 Oct 30 1989 patch.19.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 36632 Dec 17 1986 patch.2.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 8606 Dec 29 1986 patch.3.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 15252 Feb 24 1987 patch.4.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 20893 Mar 10 1987 patch.5.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 28687 Mar 24 1987 patch.6.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 4195 Apr 7 1987 patch.7.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 5813 Apr 11 1987 patch.8.Z -r--r--r-- 1 rick 23430 Sep 25 1987 patch.9.Z /usr/spool/ftp/news/cnews: total 765 -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 28749 Jan 14 18:31 10-Jan-1990.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 22886 Mar 13 14:31 12-Mar-1990.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 23010 Jan 14 18:31 13-Nov-1989.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 asp 23700 Apr 18 21:09 14-Apr-1990.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 25233 Jan 14 18:31 14-Sep-1989.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 758 Jan 14 18:31 14-Sep-1989fix -rw-rw-r-- 1 asp 21020 Apr 18 21:09 15-Apr-1990.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 asp 12806 Apr 18 21:09 16-Apr-1990.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 27386 Jan 16 22:08 16-Jan-1990.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 23309 Jan 18 01:33 17-Jan-1990.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 1487 Jan 18 23:22 18-Jan-1990.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 27851 Jan 14 18:31 22-Aug-1989.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 14358 Jan 14 18:31 23-Jul-1989.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 26284 Jan 14 18:31 23-Jun-1989.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 25271 Jan 14 18:31 24-Aug-1989.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 21398 Jan 14 18:31 7-Jul-1989.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 194 Apr 18 22:15 PATCHDATES -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 5436 Jan 14 01:46 cnews.README.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 429150 Apr 18 18:10 cnews.Z /usr/spool/ftp/news/nn: total 532 -rw-r--r-- 1 swo 15539 May 10 13:35 nn6.4.patch1.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 swo 27673 May 15 18:57 nn6.4.patch2.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 asp 485015 May 8 08:44 nn6.4.tar.Z /usr/spool/ftp/news/rn: total 403 -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 28710 Dec 17 22:05 rn.41.patch.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 29793 Dec 20 19:29 rn.42.patch.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 26904 Dec 17 22:05 rn.43.patch.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 1486 Dec 20 19:37 rn.44.patch.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 root 30682 Apr 15 03:38 rn.45.patch.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 root 245537 Apr 16 10:54 rn.45.tar.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 asp 24590 Apr 23 02:28 rn.46.patch.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 asp 12230 May 15 01:00 rn.47.patch.Z There is nothing special about this compress. If you already have compress, then don't waste your money transferring it. src.tar.Z is the source with the patches applied. If you don't have a copy of the current newsgroups, a list is available in the file uunet!~/news/newsgroups. The file is updated regularly as new groups are added. Complete lists of all the files available on uunet are in the files uunet!~/ls-lR.Z uunet!~/ls-ltR.Z These files are updated every morning. If your system won't allow you to uucp files from uunet, then you can access a limited section of our source archives by sending mail to uunet!netlib, our mail server. For example, to get an index of the available categories, do: echo send index | mail uunet!netlib To receive more information on netlib, do: echo help | mail uunet!netlib Also, please remember that you have to poll the uunet machine. The only way to get the cheap ($5) rate is if you originate the call. We can call your system if you want. The cost would be $16 per hour during day hours, and $13 per hour evening and $10 at night. (These times are Eastern Time, since we are originating the call, not your local time.) All calls, regardless of who initiates the poll, within the Washington D.C. metropolitan area are at $2 per hour. We can set it up anyway you want. The most logical setup (to us anyway) is for us to call you on demand with mail during the day and wait for you to call us during the non-peak times to pick up the rest of the mail and all of the news. Of course, you may choose any calling scheme you want. The cheapest is still for you to poll UUNET only during the offpeak times. If you want uunet to call you with mail, please send the necessary uucp login information for your system and the times you want to be called. The 800 service becomes much cheaper than the Tymnet or Compuserve service if you use one of the Trailblazer modems. This is because you will get 4-5 times as much data transferred in the same period of time. To use the 800 number, dial 1-800-877-6550. This is a 30 line rotary of Telebit T2500 modems (2400/1200/300/V.32/PEP) directly connected to the uunet computer. A sample chat script would be: uunet Any ACU 2400 1-800-877-6550 ogin: LOGIN ssword: PASSWORD To use the local number, dial 1-703-876-5055. Note that incoming local means that you are paying for the call yourself (even if it is long distance). If your company has a good deal on WATS lines it may be cheaper for you to call us via your long distance service and pay the $2.00 per hour "local" connect charge. ----- UUNET now offers access via TCP/IP for Internet sites. The cost is a flat $15 per month (in addition to the membership fee) and includes bi-directional UUCP/TCP/IP and NNTP for news transfers.
