Message-Id: <9947@discus.technion.ac.il> Sender: info-vax-request@kl.sri.com To: info-vax@kl.sri.com NCD (and probably others) Xterminals usually boot from VMS using MOP and access files using DECnet's FAL protocol. The latter is sometimes slow as a new process must be created sometimes. A more severe problem is that it works only on terminals which have DECnet license, and most companies sale it separately; not everyone buys this option... To solve the two problems it is possible to use TFTP to load the terminals and use XDM to start the login session. There are some severe problems with XDM which can be overcomed to some extent. A few pograms which do these functions using MultiNet (tested on NCD terminals but will probably work with little changes on Visual and others) can be retreived using anonymous FTP from VMS.HUJI.AC.IL at the [.LOCAL] directory under the name FTP_XDM.BCK_Z; the saveset is a compressed one which can be decoded using the LZDCM.EXE program at the [.AAALOOKHERE] directory. Note: The main difference between the standard TFTP server and this one is that the latter does not allow writing files, will serve only listed machines, and will allow access to only two directory trees (the standard VMS fonts and a defined directory for configuration and terminal image files).
