I don't have the hardware manual. > [...] The following is the procedure to switch into "aternate console mode": 1) shut down system 2) power off 3) find S3 - down is the normal position 4) set S3 up, using small pointed object - NOT A PENCIL. serial port is now a terminal port. 5) attach a terminal 6) turn on terminal 7) check baud rate [9600] 8) power on 9) if >>> doesn't appear, press BREAK on terminal - at alternate keyboard, enter DTE at the console prompt, and press return. This command converts system from console mode to terminal emulation mode An asterix is added to the console prompt after the DTE command. (*>>>) To exit terminal emulation mode, press ^P and press return - system returns to local console mode (>>>) System (with S3 up) will always attempt to use serial line. Alternate console only uses info after you enter DTE. State of S3 read only at power up. ----- ----- ----- Thanks to the following people who answered my question. Special thanks to John Hagan who sent me a hardware manual and to David Denholm who typed in the above information from a copy of his manual. Also, special thanks from someone from DEC (sorry, I forgot your name) who called me on the phone and left me a message.
