ASCII to HTML conversion utility AscToHTM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- VMS version now available for download Get it now! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On-line documentation now available! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can look at some example results here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- AscToHTM converts ASCII text files into HTML that preserves the meaning, structure and layout of the original document. What AscToHTM does AscToHTM converts ASCII documents into one or more HTML files. In doing this it attempts to preserve the overall structure and layout of the document. AscToHTM can be used :- * to convert "legacy" text to HTML. * to allow users to maintain multiple formats by mastering their documents in text and generating single HTML files or suites of HTML files from that source. An example of this is AscToHTM's on-line documentation itself. * (Cheeky one this) as an import filter for word processing packages such as Word for Windows, since AscToHTM generates structured HTML, which Word will probably import better than it does plain text. How it works The program works by making two passes through the document. 1. The first pass analyses the file to determine how the document has been laid out. This constitutes the calculated file policy for this document. Users can optionally override all or part of this by supplying their own policy. 2. The second pass :- a. converts the document to HTML using the rules laid down in the file policy. b. (optionally) breaks up the document up into a number of smaller HTML files, complete with standard HTML header and footers, and a navigation bar. c. (optionally) generates a table of contents where none exists This two-pass approach greatly reduces the error rate, and makes the generation of more sophisticated HTML possible. Users can override any or all of the calculated policy details should this prove necessary (though not yet in our email service). Tell me more You can look at a more detailed description of the conversions possible, and some example conversions. Also, we now have on-line documentation available! Currently - March 1997 - the program's algorithms are still being refined and the program is being offered as an on-line service via email. You can now download the shareware version to try it out. Currently it's available under VMS. Shortly we will release Windows and Macintosh versions. This program is also available in limited form as an email service (you mail us an ASCII document, we mail you the HTML file). Try it!
