Article 127266 of comp.os.vms: This is to announce that Yezerski Roper are making the ASCII->HTML conversion utility AscToHTM free to VMS users. This software is available under Windows as shareware. see http://www.yrl.co.uk/~jaf/ASC2html.html for details. Downloads can be got from http://www.yrl.co.uk/~jaf/A2Hdownload.html WHAT IT DOES ============ AscToHTM attempts to recognise the overall structure of a text document, rather than "just" transcribing it line-by-line to HTML. It can deal with large, structured documents as well as small files, and can turn a single text file into one or more HTML files, complete with added titles, background colour and images, headers and footers and navigation bar. The program is designed to work with your existing text files, attempting to recognise your document's style, rather than requiring you to write your documents in a style that suits AscToHTM (although if you can do this you will get better results). WHERE TO GET IT =============== The home page is http://www.yrl.co.uk/~jaf/ASC2html.html Downloads are available from http://www.yrl.co.uk/~JaF/a2hdownload.html Full on-line documentation is available at http://www.yrl.co.uk/~JaF/a2h.htm and is included (as text ready to be converted :-) in the .ZIP files. HOW IT WORKS ============ The program makes only one assumption; namely that the author has laid out their document in a self-consistant, and human-readable form. AscToHTM attempts to determine this layout using pattern recognition algorithms so that it can generate HTML to match. The use of this two-stage approach is crucial in reducing error rates (e.g. in the detection of numbered headings), and allowing more ambitious HTML to be generated. The HTML generated will - convert URLs, email addresses, most newsgroups etc to hyperlinks - recognised underlined, capitalized and numbered section headings - insert anchors before each section heading - convert cross-referenced section numbers to hyperlinks - match the original indentaion levels - mark up bullet points - spot pre-formatted text such as tables and ascii art and preserve it (in
...
markups) Users can override any or all of the document policy to correct any mistakes in the analysis, though hopefully that won't be necessary. The user's document policy can also be used to "add value" to the HTML, allowing the program to: - add title, colour and background images - split the document into smaller pages - generate a hyperlink contents list - add hyperlinks to key phrases and words through a "link dictionary" - add standard HTML headers, footers and Javascript to the generated pages. - generate files with DOS-compatible names (useful for PATHW**KS) Batch processing of multiple files is available. PRICING ETC. ============ The software is free to VMS users and FAQ maintainers. Thanks for reading this far, Jaf -- John A Fotheringham (or JAF for short :^) http://www.yrl.co.uk/~JAf
