[DIGITAL logo][DIGITAL Java] Updated: 15 April 1998 Java Home What's NewDownload and Installation Notes for JDK V1.1.5 Beta for OpenVMS Alpha V7.1: Download The JavaTM Development Kit (JDK) lets you write applets and applications that Benchmarksconform to the Java Core Application Program Interface (API). FrequentlyIMPORTANT: Asked Questions * In order to successfully install and run this beta JDK, OpenVMS Alpha mandatory prerequisite ECOs (patches) must be installed. Do not attempt Contact Us to run Java without these patches. Prerequisites The prerequisites for installing this beta kit are: * OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.1 * DIGITAL TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Alpha Version V4.1, if you plan on using network services * DECWindows Motif V1.2-4, if you plan on using AWT * MultiMedia Services for OpenVMS V2.0, if you plan on using Audio * A mandatory update (patch) for pthread. It can be found at: ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/info/java/ALPTHREADS_01071.A-DCX_AXPEXE The ALPTHREADS README file includes installation information. Please note: The ALPTHREADS_01071 kit is an update to the V7.1 threads environment that is being beta tested along with this JDK. This kit is NOT an official ECO and should NOT be applied to production systems. Also, threaded applications built on a system with ALPTHREADS_01071 installed will NOT run correctly on standard V7.1 systems due to image ident incompatibilities. DIGITAL recommends that threaded applications intended for use on V7.1 NOT be built on systems with this kit installed. There are known problems with the ALPTHREADS_01071 kit and a replacement kit is in progress. If you have already installed the ALPTHREADS_01071 kit and are experiencing problems, there is another kit available that will de-install ALPTHREADS_01071, putting things back the way they were before ALPTHREADS_01071 was installed. This kit can be found at: ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/info/java/ALPUNTHREADS_071.A-DCX_AXPEXE Download this file and run it. It will decompress into a file called: ALPUNTHREADS_071.A;2 This is a normal BACKUP saveset. Within the save set is a file called ALPUNTHREADS_071.RELEASE_NOTES. Extract this file and read it for detailed instructions on how to apply the kit. * A mandatory ECO (patch) for higher-priority thread blocking. The patch can be found at: http://www.service.digital.com:8031//public/Readmes/vms At the above URL, enter ALPSYS11_071 into the "Query" window and click "Submit Query". * A mandatory ECO that fixes a problem that can occur when using the exec functions. The patch can be found at: http://www.service.digital.com:8031//public/Readmes/vms At the above URL, enter ALPACRT05_071 into the "Query" window and click "Submit Query". Note: For issues concerning the service.digital.com gateway only, you will need to log a call. An on-line form can be found at URL: http://www.service.digital.com/html/gw-feedback.html Please Read Before Installing the JDK 1.1.5 Beta If you have previously installed our JAVA 1.1 kit, when you now install our JAVA 1.1.5 beta kit, it will automatically deinstall JAVA 1.1. To work around it, simply rename DEC-AXPVMS-JAVA-A0101-5-2.PCSI to DEC-AXPVMS-JAVA-A0101-5-1.PCSI and you will be able to continue with the product installation. The name will be fixed with the next release of our kit. We apologize for the inconvenience. JDK Documentation The JDK documentation is installed on your system at the following location: SYS$COMMON:[SYSHLP.JAVA]INDEX.HTML The installation information on this web page supersedes the information contained in the README file included in the downloaded kit. Post-Installation - Running Setup Run JAVA$SETUP.COM to establish defaults for the logical names CLASSPATH and JAVA$FILENAME_CONTROLS, and to define symbols that determine whether Java will interpret commands as either foreign commands or DCL commands: $ @SYS$MANAGER:JAVA$SETUP.COM The JAVA$SETUP.COM procedure calls SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSHELP.JAVA]JAVA$FILENAME_CONTROLS.COM to establish the JAVA$FILENAME_CONTROLS default values. You can edit this file to see what defaults are being used and how to change them. (This information is also in the "UNIX Style Filenames on an OpenVMS System" section of the JDK release notes.) JAVA$SETUP.COM sets the CLASSPATH default as follows: $ define/nolog CLASSPATH "/sys$common/java/lib/JDK115_CLASSES.ZIP:."
