The terse MicroVAX II recovery dept
 The Question is:

How to repair damaged system files?
How to boot VMS 5.4 on MicroVax II?

 The Answer is :

Given the thousands of files involved and the lack of details on the
particular damage incurred, the OpenVMS Wizard would suggest reloading
from BACKUP if available, or use of standalone BACKUP to attempt to
save the application data files followed by a complete reinstallation
-- preferably of a supported OpenVMS VAX release -- and merging back
in the required site-specific application data files.

Given the likely age of the storage hardware involved and (again) the
lack of details on the particular error messages seen, this problem
could also result from a storage (disk) failure.

The console BOOT command for the MicroVAX II is:

    BOOT

V5.4 is no longer supported. As of this writing, V7.3 is current.

OpenVMS VAX installation and upgrade manuals are available at the
  OpenVMS website.
