Ok -- sufficient people have asked for the code that I'll just post it.

LOGINOUT_HACK follows in two parts -- it can serve as a model for 
getting an arbitrary terminal device connected to a daemon program,
and as an example of how to do a merged image activation.  It comes
in two pieces.
