For example: p y" $ SPELL/FORMAT/LOG DICNAME.LGP l e How DECspell Defines a Word 9 DECspell considers any set of alphanumeric characters, 1 separated by spaces, punctuation marks or line 4 boundaries, to be a word. Words may also contain 4 certain other special characters, such as hyphen, 3 period, apostrophe, ampersand (&) or dollar ($). : However, if the document is in RUNOFF format, DECspell 1 does not consider RUNOFF commands to be words. c w8 Words are verified only if they contain an alphabetic
character. Hyphenation 8 If a word contains a hyphen, DECspell will check each 2 part of the word. If either part is not in the 8 dictionary, the word will be highlighted as an error. h Capitalization 9 If you add a word to your personal dictionary that has : an initial capital, for example David, the same word in - lowercase will be highlighted as an error. s e9 If you add a word all in uppercase, for example JANE, 8 the same word with only an initial capital or all in - lowercase will be highlighted as an error. 7 However, if you add a word that is all in lowercase, 3 for example jones, the same word with an initial 4 capital or all in uppercase is passed as correct. DCL Command Qualifiers 3 Ignore this page if you are using DECspell from ALL-IN-1. e4 Qualifiers alter the way DECspell works. You use 8 them when starting DECspell. You can abbreviate any - qualifier and use more than one at a time. /OUTPUT 4 Gives the corrected document a new name. If this 8 qualifier is not used the corrected document will be 8 stored under its original name with a higher version number. For example: e' $ SPELL/OUTPUT=NEWNAME.TXT NAME.TXT l /NOPERSONAL_DICTIONARY e- Prevents your default personal dictionary a9 (PERSONAL.LGP) being used for checking. For example: - - $ SPELL/NOPERS NAME.TXT - - /PERSONAL_DICTIONARY -8 Specifies a different current personal dictionary to : that used during the previous spelling check (that is, 8 the dictionary to which words will be added when you 9 use the ADD option on the DECspell Command Menu). For e example: o $ SPELL/PERS=DICT1 NAME.TXT u i /DICTIONARY 7 Specifies personal dictionaries for checking, other 8 than your default personal dictionary. For example: ' $ SPELL/DICT=(DICT1,DICT2) NAME.TXT n /KEYPAD y9 Specifies an alternative editor layout to the default e6 WPS keypad layout. You can specify WPS or EDT. For
example: $ SPELL/KEYPAD=EDT NAME.TXT /MASTER_DICTIONARY 6 Specifies an alternative master dictionary to your 4 default master dictionary. You can choose either 4 AMERICAN or BRITISH. The default depends on your 8 installation. (NOTE: You can only use this qualifier : if the system you are using has both dictionaries.) For
example: o ! $ SPELL/MAST=BRITISH NAME.TXT d i /DX e: Displays the index of your documents created on a word 7 processor and transferred by DX. /RUNOFF : Indicates that the document is a RUNOFF document, if it 9 does not already have a .RN% file type. DECspell then 3 by-passes the RUNOFF commands when checking the - document. When you C1 first use DECspell many of your specialized a8 words will be highlighted as errors and so it will 0 take longer to check documents. manager.) Personal Dictionaries N0 The documents you check may contain specialized8 words that are not in DECspell's master dictionary; for8 example, names of people, jargon or words specific to a profession. 5 You can create personal dictionaries to contain suchr4 words, and use them for checking. This will prevent# these words being found as errors.r To Create Personal Dictionaries D/ The first time you use DECspell, you are asked , whether you would like to create a personal* dictionary. Type Y if you would like one.0 This dictionary is called your DEFAULT personal( dictionary. It is stored under the name* PERSONAL.LGP in your top level directory. f) Use your editor to create other personalr2 dictionaries in your top level directory with the file type .LGP i For example: $ EDIT STAFF.LGP i2 When adding to them with your editor, you can put5 more than one word per line; separate the words withh' spaces. The words can be in any order. N) Using Personal Dictionaries for Checkingr y4 Your default personal dictionary is always used for4 checking, unless you use the /NOPERSONAL_DICTIONARY" qualifier when starting DECspell. 0 To use other personal dictionaries for checking, use the /DICTIONARY qualifier when starting DECspell. For example:u t' $ SPELL/DICTIONARY=STAFF.LGP NAME.TXTF A, You can use up to ten personal dictionaries1 including those created by other DECspell users.4 Enclose a list within brackets () and separate each dictionary name with a comma. f' Adding Words While Checking a Documenti i4 When you use the ADD option on the DECspell Command. Menu, words are added to the current personal4 dictionary. Unless you specify otherwise, this will% be your default personal dictionary. E2 Use the DICTIONARY option on the DECspell Command- Menu to select any other dictionary that youn4 specified with the /DICTIONARY qualifier, to be the current personal dictionary.B R2 When you select DICTIONARY the dictionaries being2 used for checking are displayed, with the current! personal dictionary highlighted.d 5 To change to a new current personal dictionary, moved5 the highlighting to the required dictionary with the arrow keys and press RETURN.l e, NOTE: If you use the /NOPERSONAL_DICTIONARY. qualifier when starting DECspell, the current4 personal dictionary is the first one specified with the /DICTIONARY qualifier. ' To Add Words While Checking a Documentu l4 When you use the ADD option on the DECspell Command. Menu, words are added to the current personal4 dictionary. Unless you changed it on the Dictionary3 Selection Form, this will be your default personali dictionary. k3 To add to an alternative dictionary while checking - a document, use the DICTIONARY option on the5 DECspell Command Menu to change the current personal dictionary. 1 You can only add to one personal dictionary at a time. o The Dictionary Formatter e1 The DECspell dictionary formatter organizes yourG- personal dictionaries in the following ways:o e, o sorts the entries into alphanumeric order s o removes duplicate entries , Enter SPELL/FORMAT, followed by the name of the dictionary. For example:t $ SPELL/FORMAT DICNAME.LGP 8 Note that if you combine /FORMAT with other qualifiers, you must specify /FORMAT first. n8 Words are arranged in columns across the page. Each new8 initial letter begins a new paragraph. If you want each7 word to be positioned on a new line, use the /NOPACKED qualifier. For example: i% $ SPELL/FORMAT/NOPACKED DICNAME.LGPs 6 If you want to see a list of duplicate words that are. removed, use the /LOG qualifier. For example: i $ SPELL/FORMAT/LOG DICNAME.LGP p r How DECspell Defines a Word b7 DECspell considers any set of alphanumeric characters, / separated by spaces, punctuation marks or line	2 boundaries, to be a word. Words may also contain2 certain other special characters, such as hyphen,1 period, apostrophe, ampersand (&) or dollar ($). 7 However, if the document is in RUNOFF format, DECspello/ does not consider RUNOFF commands to be words.c k6 Words are verified only if they contain an alphabetic character.s l Hyphenation p6 If a word contains a hyphen, DECspell will check each0 part of the word. If either part is not in the6 dictionary, the word will be highlighted as an error. W e Capitalizationl o7 If you add a word to your personal dictionary that hasl8 an initial capital, for example David, the same word in+ lowercase will be highlighted as an error.c W6 If you add a word all in uppercase, for example JANE,5 the same word with only an initial capital or all iny+ lowercase will be highlighted as an error. l5 However, if you add a word that is all in lowercase,s1 for example jones, the same word with an initial 2 capital or all in uppercase is passed as correct. u g DCL Command Qualifiersr k2 Qualifiers alter the way DECspell works. You use5 them when starting DECspell. You can abbreviate anyh+ qualifier and use more than one at a time.r i /OUTPUT1 Gives the corrected document a new name. If this5 qualifier is not used the corrected document will be.5 stored under its original name with a higher versioni number. For example:n h% $ SPELL/OUTPUT=NEWNAME.TXT NAME.TXTe s /NOPERSONAL_DICTIONARYo* Prevents your default personal dictionary5 (PERSONAL.LGP) being used for checking. For example:t s $ SPELL/NOPERS NAME.TXTt o /PERSONAL_DICTIONARY 5 Specifies a different current personal dictionary to7 that used during the previous spelling check (that is, 5 the dictionary to which words will be added when youe6 use the ADD option on the DECspell Command Menu). For example: t $ SPELL/PERS=DICT1 NAME.TXTw /DICTIONARY4 Specifies personal dictionaries for checking, other4 than your default personal dictionary. For example: C% $ SPELL/DICT=(DICT1,DICT2) NAME.TXT I /KEYPAD6 Specifies an alternative editor layout to the default3 WPS keypad layout. You can specify WPS or EDT. For example:n d $ SPELL/KEYPAD=EDT NAME.TXT i /MASTER_DICTIONARYL3 Specifies an alternative master dictionary to youre1 default master dictionary. You can choose eitherh1 AMERICAN or BRITISH. The default depends on your5 installation. (NOTE: You can only use this qualifier 8 if the system you are using has both dictionaries.) For example:c n $ SPELL/MAST=BRITISH NAME.TXTT d /RUNOFF8 Indicates that the document is a RUNOFF document, if it6 does not already have a .RN% file type. DECspell then0 by-passes the RUNOFF commands when checking the document. For example: t $ SPELL/RUNOFF NAME.TXTi i s Helpful Hints c3 o You are encouraged to add words to your personalt5 dictionaries whenever you check a document. When youS, first use DECspell many of your specialized3 words will be highlighted as errors and so it willy+ take longer to check documents. As you addm6 specialized words to your personal dictionaries fewer% words will be highlighted as errors.s f6 o DECspell compiles corrections lists from the master5 dictionary, any personal dictionaries being used and % any words you IGNORE in the session.u e, o Remember that GLOBAL REPLACE replaces the4 unrecognized word throughout the document. However,5 if you finish using DECspell before you have checkedp5 the whole document, GLOBAL REPLACE replaces the worde) only as far as the document has reached. n5 o Be careful not to add real spelling errors to your/ personal dictionaries. (NOTE: You can edit the dictionary to remove them.) e8 o Remember that if you finish using DECspell before you4 have checked the whole document, words you selected5 to PASS or IGNORE will be highlighted as errors when " you return to check the document. y7 o You cannot use the DICTIONARY option unless you havee5 chosen to use more than one dictionary for checking.y i7 o Remember you cannot go back through a document whileE using DECspell. Further Information g6 For more information on the OpenVMS operating system,# refer to the OpenVMS document set.e g3 For more information on DECspell, refer to the VAXn( DECspell System and Installation Guide. t4 The information presented here is subject to change0 without notice and should not be construed as a6 commitment by Digital Equipment Corporation.
